Happy Birthday Nicolas!

Nicolas turns 2 today...

...and our hearts are torn because we're not with him to celebrate, and yet, we know that he's coming home soon (and we're so very happy about that!!). We are grateful to know that he is loved and he has a foster family that is taking good care of him, we just want to be with him.

We've been torn all week deciding if we should do something to celebrate Nicolas' birthday. We feel we should do something, but we don't know what we should do. We've thought about not celebrating and that doesn't feel quite right either. We've decided to do a couple of things to keep us busy and to celebrate Nicolas. We're going to bake a special birthday cake, and we've bought him a couple of birthday presents. I have also hung some balloons up in his room (which will be a surprise for Eric too!). I read about a birthday tradition where parents hang up balloons in the child's room while they sleep so that in the morning the first thing they see is balloons. An extra special way to start their extra special day.

Nicolas, we wish that we could be with you...we love you and can't wait for us to all be together. Love you lots and lots...mama and daddy

The balloons are a wonderful idea and of course a cake is always nice!! This will be Nicolas's last birthday without his mom and day so that is one BIG thing to be celebrating. I hope your little boy is having a wonderful birthday on the other side of the world!!

Tammy,
I remember how upsetting and bittersweet it was when Lily turned 1 in Thailand and I couldn't be there to celebrate her birthday with her. I focused on all the milestones I'd missed (crawling, walking...) by the time we picked her up at 13 months. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized...I have a lifetime of birthdays and milestones to share with this precious little girl. How lucky am I? I love how Renee put it. This is the LAST birthday your son will have to celebrate without you!

I love that you are commemorating Nicolas' birthday even though he, sadly, cannot be with you. We ALWAYS fill Lily's room with dozens of balloons at night, so she sees them in the morning. It's a tradition she absolutely LOVES!

Happy Birthday!! And I hope your travel approval comes any day!!!

love the balloons idea. my mom used to (and maybe still does to this day) make pancit noodles to mark each of her kids' birthdays (and ensure our longevity, she said), even long after we left home and had homes of our own. I love the idea of moms doing something special for their kids' birthdays even when they're not together in the same place. happy birthday to your little one!
